Hullo people from the computer science tag! I wonder how many wandered in and got totally confused at the fact that this is a fanfiction blog 90% of the time.

I have very minor experience with MATLAB from my math class. It’s really more of a tool for mathematicians and engineers - making simulations and calculations and all that - and not for making the kind of programs that you do with Java. Try learning some Python or Javascript (which should not be confused as being similar to Java; it has no relation other than name) to get a better feel. Both are taught on Codecademy (http://www.codecademy.com/). If you’re self-teaching, also look into communities like /r/learnprogramming (http://www.reddit.com/r/learnprogramming/).

I find my coursework challenging but not overly so. I’m a solid-B student with a part-time job, internship offers, decent social life, and time to write and draw, and I consider myself a procrastinator. The big ol’ post explained the most general of class overviews and I didn’t want to go too in-depth, because rating the difficulty and enjoyment of the major depends entirely on the college and professors you get (for example, a business major in a small state college and one from Stanford are two totally different experiences). You’re better off asking computer science majors in the college that you attend/want to go to. Perhaps try the college confidential forums (http://www.collegeconfidential.com/ - mind the crazies).

This is the same high school junior interested in CS(assuming there's only one). I'm thinking about taking Computer Programming 1, which deals with Alice, whatever that is, learning java, python, and programing a robot. I've seen java and I'm a bit worried about it. Do you have experience with java? Should I be worried? Also, what should I be looking for in laptops? I know some of the lower end ones have some trouble with compilers. I just read your CS post and it's very helpful, thank you!

That’s great that your school has a CS class! I’ve heard Alice is gaining ground across high schools. I’ve actually tutored a class that used Alice (the class is geared toward non-majors) so I know how to use it. It teaches the fundamental computing concepts usually learned in an intro class at college and has a similar style to Java (‘object-oriented’ programming language).

Java and Python are pretty popular intro languages at schools. I learned Java first and I learned Python at work in order to write some scripts; it only took about half an hour for me to pick it up and get a script written. That’s what I mean when I say it’s not that hard to pick up a new language once you have one down, although Python is particularly easy to learn - it’s intuitive and needs less bells and whistles for something simple to work, while in Java you have to set up files a certain way and it has a lot of new keywords that you won’t understand all at once.

It can be intimidating at first. Remembering back to my intro class, everyone was a bit confused and flailed around for the first few weeks, but after you play with Java for a while, it starts to make sense and by the end of the class, it’s not bad at all. I think anyone with an interest in it would have learned all of the material, but also a great deal of that was dependent on the professor, and I had a great one. It’s just a lot of unfamiliar stuff, and it can be strange learning an entirely new topic that’s difficult to relate to other subjects like English or biology; you probably haven’t had to do that since elementary school. I’d compare learning how to code like learning a new verbal language and its grammar rules.

As for laptops, I’ve always owned a Mac. I’d say it’s about 50/50 Mac/Windows split when I look in a full discussion hall. I personally prefer using a Mac because it’s a Unix-based operating system and easier to use with other Unix systems, which is what your comp sci labs will likely have and require you to do homework on. No one I know likes the Windows command prompt. I’m pretty biased heh, but a lot of people do use Windows so it clearly works for them, and most tools I’ve come across are available for Windows/Mac/Linux.

Here’s actually a list of stuff I have at least some experience with, in case of future questions:
General: Java, C++, C, Assembly, Python, Actionscript, Ocaml, Scala
Web-related: HTML/CSS, Javascript (and Jquery), PHP, MySQL
Other: Unix (command line stuff and scripts), regular expressions, text editors, git
